Dentistry Was Once Built to Preserve Teeth

When modern dentistry emerged in the early 1800s, the philosophy was simple: preserve as much of the natural tooth as possible. Dentists carefully restored damaged teeth using conservative techniques such as gold inlays, onlays, and full-cast gold crowns. These restorations required minimal removal of healthy tooth structure and were designed to protect teeth for decades, often lasting a lifetime.

The Shift Toward Faster, Cheaper Dentistry

As dentistry evolved, patient demand for lower-cost treatment increased. Silver-colored restorations became more common, and later, dental insurance encouraged standardized procedures that prioritized efficiency and affordability. Over time, conservative restorations like gold inlays and onlays became far less common, despite their exceptional longevity. The focus gradually shifted from preserving natural tooth to providing treatment that was faster and less expensive.

The Cost of Modern Restorations

The introduction of tooth-colored fillings and porcelain-based crowns transformed cosmetic dentistry, however, they often required removing significantly more healthy tooth structure than traditional conservative restorations. As restorations wear, fracture, or need replacement over time, each replacement often requires removing additional tooth structure, creating a cycle of progressively larger restorations that can eventually lead to root canals, extractions, or implants.

Biomimetic Dentistry: A Better Way Forward

In 2002, Biomimetic Dentistry introduced a new approach that combined modern adhesive technology with the original philosophy of preserving natural teeth. Instead of automatically placing crowns or removing unnecessary healthy tooth structure, Biomimetic Dentistry focuses on restoring teeth as conservatively as possible while recreating their natural strength, function, and durability. This is the philosophy that guides every treatment in our practice. Our goal is not simply to fix teeth, it is to preserve them, helping you keep your natural smile healthier and stronger for as long as possible.
